CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Champaign’s Centennial and Central High Schools each held virtual Honors Day recognitions for their 2020 graduating classes this week. Over 100 seniors from each high school were presented with awards, honors, and scholarships based on achievements in academics, athletics, citizenship, music, volunteerism, and many other categories.
While the annual Honors Day ceremonies are typically held at each school with family members in attendance. The accolades are only unveiled to the students at the time of the ceremony presentation.
Unit 4 congratulations the 2020 eighth grade classes at Edison Middle School, Franklin STEAM Academy, and Jefferson Middle School on their promotions to high school!
The Champaign Urbana Schools Foundation (CUSF) honored Unit 4’s Kirstin Sowers as one of its two 2020 Shining Star Awards (formerly known as the Cup Cake Awards). Selected teachers are nominated by their peers and exhibit exemplary service, extra efforts, enthusiastic attitude, and innovative ideas that noticeably benefit their students.
Sowers, a K-12 ESL Coach/Coordinator, has been devoted to English Language Learning acquisition for nearly 20 yeats. In her current role, she serves as the English as a Second Language Coordinator for all K-12 schools in Unit 4.
Dear Elementary School and Middle School Families:
Moving from 5th grade into middle school and from 8th grade into high school are important milestones for both students and families. However, because of COVID-19 and the state’s mandate regarding social distancing, these milestones will be different this year. In the interest of safety, Unit 4 elementary and middle schools will not be hosting public events for 5th and 8th grade promotion. Because of logistical issues, virtual ceremonies will not be held either.
Incoming 2020-21 kindergarten students registered during the Schools of Choice process will be notified of their school assignment by mail in late May.
The registration period for new students to the District is May 1 - June 12, 2020. Parents must show current or impending residency in the form of two of the following:
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Champaign Unit 4 School District announced approval of three appointments during its Board of Education meeting Monday night. Linda Matkowski is the District’s new CFO while Dara’ Fenner is the new assistant principal at Central High School and Brian Alexander-Ward is the new assistant principal of Stratton Academy.
In accordance with CDC guidelines and the State mandate to limit in-person attendance at public events due to the COVID-19 public health crisis, the Unit 4 Board of Education meeting on Mon., April 27, 2020 will be conducted virtually. In person attendance will comply with CDC guidelines and the state mandate for social distancing with chairs set up six feet apart.
Unit 4 Statement on 2020 IHSA Spring Sports
The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) today announced its decision to cancel all IHSA spring state tournaments. The decision comes in conjunction with the state’s recent announcement that all Illinois high schools will complete the 2019-20 school term from home.
As a result, all spring sport practices and competitions involving Unit 4 schools are cancelled for the remainder of the season regardless of future decisions by the IHSA.

Governor Pritzker today announced that school facilities will remain closed for the rest of the school year. That means we will continue with our previously announced remote learning plans for the remainder of the year. We will continue to do everything we can to help students, families and staff members during the COVID-19 public health crisis.

Champaign Unit 4 will hold its food distribution on Monday, April 13, despite it being a holiday for the District. It will be at the same three schools, Garden Hills Academy, Booker T. Washington and Jefferson Middle School from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.
